One of the most frequently quoted reasons for not engaging with open-source information is the understandable concerns about the 'quality' of the high, and expanding, volume of highly diverse publicly available content that is changing rapidly (volume, variety and velocity of OSINF) and, of course, the veracity of what is collected. To address this Janes employs two parallel and interrelated concepts in our tried and tested tradecraft: 'Triple-lock' verification and a metric-based approach for measuring data quality, summarized by the acronym 'TRACS'. The former can be simply described as the strict adherence to multi-source validation and multi-point analysis audit; the latter, a means by which the 'quality' or 'perceived assurance' of provided OSINT can be assessed across 4, interrelated key dimensions: Timeliness, Relevance, Accuracy and Completeness; which sum to provide a level of Assurance.
No, Janes Intara enables the integration of customer own, and third party data into the Janes data model enabling it to be interconnected with Janes assured open-source intelligence. We do not apply our tradecraft to non-Janes content and as such it is not verified or validated by Janes.
The Janes Data Model is the most comprehensive and complete open-source military knowledge base in the world. It defines key entities, relationships and data in a flexible way to support multiple requirements for defence. The use of a unique identifier down to the variant level, unit level or similar enables a standardised descriptor of each item, entity or concept. It is the framework that enables the normalisation and interconnection of defence entities.
Janes Intara includes Janes data and access to Janes framework or data model which is integrated into a customer's own system, accessed via any application. By integrating Janes data model into a customer's own system, the customer can integrate their first party data with Janes data creating significant value. While solutions available on Janes online, such as the explorer tools, are powered by the data and data model that make up Janes Intara, customers can't utilise the Janes framework and/or data model to get the full benefit offered by utilising the Janes Data Model.
Janes Intara is accessible in two primary forms.
First, customers can access Janes Intara through our graph API and associated configuration libraries. We provide ongoing support and configuration services in support to effectively bring Janes Intara into our customers environments. Alongside the API, the customer will also receive access to the Janes Intara Developer Portal which includes in-depth details on the data model, API queries guidance, Release Notes and other useful documents.
Second, we also provide configuration services into existing analytic workflows and tools. Janes will assist with integration into existing business systems. For each licensed system Janes will provide technical integration support. Janes will provide support to data scientists and analysts for integrating Janes data into their analytic workflow.
A graph database is a database designed to treat the relationships between data as equally important to the data itself. The relationships between the Janes Intara assured data, such as ORBATs, supply chains, and systems and their associated weapons systems, are all linked and these linkages are included as part of Janes Intara. In the same way that lat/long provides a geospatial context, a graph provides contextualisation across time, space and systems - including ORBATs, supply chains, system dependencies etc.
Janes Intara is built on the RDF4J GraphDB by Ontotext. However, customer will only access the content through Janes APIs and not via direct database access.
As a data company, not a platform, we are interoperable with not only a wide range of inputs (including customer own and 3rd party data), but also can be ingested into customer platforms as needed. Our business model is based upon Janes providing foundational military intelligence and open-source data wherever it is needed by warfighters and analysts. This means if you change inputs or change analytic platforms, we will continue to support although some additional configuration may be required.
To support our business we adopted globally industry recognised security standards, including as ISO27001 and the NIST standards. We are currently Cyber Essentials Plus certified which is a UK Government supply chain prerequisite. We are also conscious of the US Governments new CMMC standard and are aligned with them.
